Did you know that Vet Tech and Veterinarian students receive minimal training in nutrition? Did you know that the little training they do receive is funded and sponsored by big name brand kibble companies (more likely than not “Science Diet”)? Do you believe that this is fair? Do you believe that, in order to become a doctor for animals, a student should be exposed to the number one variable in determining health which is nutrition? If you answered yes to all of these questions, Keep Reading!
My ultimate long term professional goal is to change the current nutrition studies (or lack there of) that Vet Tech and Veterinarian students receive. I believe that the foods pets eat directly affect their health and well being. If someone is going to Vet Tech or Veterinarian school they should be encouraged to look after the well being and health of every animal they will care for in the future, not the best way to make lots of money (and also make lots of money for the kibble companies that Veterinarians constantly advertise and recommend in their offices). I believe that the kibble companies are directly marketing their kibbles to young and eager students and grab a hold of them and any future clients they have as money making pawns in their game of Capital Health.
In order to evoke these kinds of changes, there first has to be solid evidence on the best nutrition for pets. That is where the Raw Food vs. Kibble research study that I will conduct comes into play. I plan on, once graduating Veterinary school, conducting the first scientific research study on dogs and cats fed a Prey Model Raw diet vs. Kibble diet. I will take three seemingly healthy puppies/kittens from the same litters of three different breeds of dog/cat to start. One from each litter will be fed a PMR diet from weaning till death, one will be fed strictly “high quality” kibble from weaning till death, and the third will be weaned onto “high quality” kibble, and half way through life (around five years of age) switched to a PMR diet. For comparison reasons (and legal reasons) I will be forced to vaccinate all parties according to mainstream Veterinary practice as I would not want any assumed “skewing” of results (though this will hurt me greatly as I do not believe in yearly vaccination schedules but this research will be fully focused on diet). These specific research subjects should reach the end of their life cycle about 17-20 years from start. Then, I will conduct the entire experiment over again, with completely different breeds of dogs/cats (if everything is physically and mentally okay with my health at this point, haha). I feel this would be more than sufficient in showing what exactly a PMR diet does for dogs/cats and hopefully once the study is published, I would be able to finally give future carnivorous domesticated pets a chance at a full, healthy and happy life.
Let’s fast forward. Let’s say that I do, in fact, change the way the Vet Tech and Veterinary schools teach nutrition for dogs/cats. The end result of this would be that Veterinarians across the country would hand out pamphlets about a proper Prey Model Raw diet for dogs/cats to new clients. This means that Veterinarians would recommend this diet first and foremost to new clients. Then, if for whatever reason the client says they cannot feed their dog/cat a PMR diet, the Veterinarian tells them about other alternative ways of feeding (enter the major kibble company’s pamphlet).
All I am ultimately trying to do is educate dog/cat owners that feeding their pet a diet made of raw meat, bones and organs is not a scary thing. It is not a potentially dangerous thing. It is not an abnormal taboo thing. It is the natural thing. It is the perfect thing. If after being educated on the biology and digestive tract of their pet; If after offering evidence that shows it works; If after given true and accurate insight from a trusted professional the owner declines to feed their pet a species appropriate diet, then and only then should kibble be recommended. A Veterinarian recommending that an owner feed a dog a Prey Model Raw diet should be no different than a human doctor recommending a client a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and grains.
One day, hopefully, these words on a screen will translate into reality.
I hope you have enjoyed this blog and as always if you have any dog related question feel free to ask!
